The Smittens - The Coolest Thing About Love [2008]

The Smittens, with three primary vocalists, are a veritable twee pop variety show. Max Andrucki's baritone resembles that of Stephin Merritt and contrasts dramatically with the whisper-soft vocals of Dana Kaplan and indie pop veteran Colin Clary. The group is at its best when singing about love and nature, but branches out occasionally; "It's a Saturday" humorously adapts the Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night" into a Smittens theme song, while the oblique social commentary of "H&M (+A)" seems out of place on a collection of mostly hearts-and-flowers ditties. The Coolest Thing About Love is the Smittens' third album and their most accomplished to date -- the ensemble vocal performances are tighter than ever and the songs easily rate among the group's best.

Razorcuts - R is for... Razorcuts

Combining classic songcraft, chiming guitars and heartfelt vocals to create a prototypical indie sound, The Razorcuts were one of the best and most influential groups to come out of the UK-based C86 scene of the mid-'80s. They recorded the obligatory flexi-disc tracks, a batch of singles for Subway Organisation and two wonderful LPs for Creation, all of which were impossible to find on CD until now. The fine folks at Matinee have put together a compilation that gathers tracks from throughout their career and makes a strong case for the Razorcuts as one of the great British bands of the 1980s. Starting off with the beautiful "I'll Still Be There," the disc charts the Razorcuts (who consisted of Gregory Webster on guitar and vocals, Tim Vass on bass and vocals, and a revolving cast of other musicians) as their sound progressed from lo-fi indie pop to full and majestic folk-rock-tinged balladry by the end of their career. Along the way are such classic songs as the aching "Sorry to Embarrass You," "Brighter Now," "Contract With God" (a tune the Byrds would have been glad to call their own), and Tim Vass' fave, "I Won't Let You Down." A nice inclusion at the end of the disc are three bonus-track rarities: the 1986 flexi-disc track "Sad Kaleidoscope"; the surf pastiche demo from 1985, "The Horror of Party Beach"; and the single version of "I'll Still Be There." The liner notes are another treat, with reminiscences from both Webster and Vass as well as essays by Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne and the Legend (aka Everett True). The disc is a wonderful exercise in nostalgia for fans lucky enough to have heard the Razorcuts when they were active and is a must-have for anyone who is a fan of the current crop of indie pop groups who use the Razorcuts as one of the blocks their sound is built on. Southern soul really was natural as rain, a mixture of blues, R&B, gospel and country that somehow managed to sound exactly like, well, soul, no matter how many ways it was spun, and from its first stirrings in the early 1960s until disco and synthesizers officially killed it off in the mid-'70s, a case could be made that there was no more exciting music coming out of America. This wonderful three-disc, 75-track set traces that very arc in mostly chronological order, beginning with William Bell's "You Don't Miss Your Water" from 1961 and ending with Geater Davis' last-gasp "I'll Play the Blues for You " from 1977. In between is some very exciting music indeed, including Otis Redding's stunning "These Arms of Mine," Charlie Rich's "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby" (who says soul and country aren't two sides of the same coin?), James Carr's stark and desperate "The Dark End of the Street," Etta James' powerful "I'd Rather Go Blind," Chuck Brooks' brilliant and dangerous-sounding "Love's Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down," and a pair of Al Green classics, "Tired of Being Alone" and the title tune, "Take Me to the River," and that's just a quick list of the gems found in this delightful set. Released by labels like Stax, Goldwax, Excello, Fame,
and Dial, southern soul was all about emotion and groove and always sounded rougher, sexier, and more dangerous than what northern labels like Motown were doing in the same time period. Truthfully, southern soul was what it was because of the high mixture of passionate gospel in its DNA, as if these artists hoped to sing their way out of hell and into heaven. The subject was love, in all of its guises, and much like country, soul carried every bit as much sadness as it did joy. Love doesn't always work out right, whether you make it to heaven or not. That's the bottom line, and no genre has ever celebrated a more adult approach to such matters, or filled the world with so much passion for it, than southern soul. The story is here.

The Concert For Bangladesh was the event title for two benefit concerts organized by George Harrison and Ravi Shankar,
held at noon and at 7:00 p.m. on August 1, 1971, playing to a total of 40,000 people at Madison Square Garden in New
York City. Organized for the relief of refugees from East Pakistan (now independent Bangladesh) after the 1970 Bhola
cyclone and during the 1971 Bangladesh atrocities and Bangladesh Liberation War, the event was the first benefit
concert of this magnitude in world history. It featured an all-star supergroup of performers that included Ravi Shankar,
Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Badfinger, and Ringo Starr.
An album was released later in 1971 and a concert film was released in 1972, with later releases for home video. In 2005,
the film was re-issued on DVD accompanied by a new documentary.

Get Behind Me Satan is the fifth album by American alternative rock band The White Stripes, released on June 7, 2005 on V2 Records. Though still basic in production style, the album marked a distinct change from its guitar-heavy 2003 predecessor, Elephant. With its reliance on piano-driven melodies and experimentation with marimba on "The Nurse" and "Forever For Her (Is Over For Me)", Get Behind Me Satan downplays the punk, garage rock and blues influences that dominated earlier White Stripes albums. Frontman Jack White plays with different technique than in the past, trading in his electric guitar for piano, mandolin, and acoustic guitar on all but a handful of tracks, as his usual riff-conscious lead guitar style is overtaken by a predominantly rhythmic approach.

Elephant is the fourth album by the American alternative rock band The White Stripes. Released on April 1, 2003 on V2 Records, the album marks the band's major label debut.
White Blood Cells may have been a reaction to the amount of fame the White Stripes had received up to the point of its release, but, paradoxically, it made full-fledged rock stars out of Jack and Meg White and sold over half a million copies in the process. Despite the White Stripes' ambivalence, fame nevertheless seems to suit them: They just become more accomplished as the attention paid to them increases. Elephant captures this contradiction within the Stripes and their music; it's the first album they've recorded for a major label, and it sounds even more pissed-off, paranoid, and stunning than its predecessor. Darker and more difficult than White Blood Cells, the album offers nothing as immediately crowd-pleasing or sweet as "Fell in Love With a Girl" or "We're Going to Be Friends," but it's more consistent, exploring disillusionment and rejection with razor-sharp focus. Chip-on-the-shoulder anthems like the breathtaking opener, "Seven Nation Army," which is driven by Meg White's explosively minimal drumming, and "The Hardest Button to Button," in which Jack White snarls "Now we're a family!" -- one of the best oblique threats since Black Francis sneered "It's educational!" all those years ago -- deliver some of the fiercest blues-punk of the White Stripes' career. "There's No Home for You Here" sets a girl's walking papers to a melody reminiscent of "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" (though the result is more sequel than rehash), driving the point home with a wall of layered, Queen-ly harmonies and piercing guitars, while the inspired version of "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" goes from plaintive to angry in just over a minute, though the charging guitars at the end sound perversely triumphant. At its bruised heart, Elephant portrays love as a power struggle, with chivalry and innocence usually losing out to the power of seduction. "I Want to Be the Boy" tries, unsuccessfully, to charm a girl's mother; "You've Got Her in Your Pocket," a deceptively gentle ballad, reveals the darker side of the Stripes' vulnerability, blurring the line between caring for someone and owning them with some fittingly fluid songwriting.
The battle for control reaches a fever pitch on the "Fell in Love With a Girl"-esque "Hypnotize," which suggests some slightly underhanded ways of winning a girl over before settling for just holding her hand, and on the show-stopping "Ball and Biscuit," seven flat-out seductive minutes of preening, boasting, and amazing guitar prowess that ranks as one the band's most traditionally bluesy (not to mention sexy) songs. Interestingly, Meg's star turn, "In the Cold, Cold Night," is the closest Elephant comes to a truce in this struggle, her kitten-ish voice balancing the song's slinky words and music. While the album is often dark, it's never despairing; moments of wry humor pop up throughout, particularly toward the end. "Little Acorns" begins with a sound clip of Detroit newscaster Mort Crim's Second Thoughts radio show, adding an authentic, if unusual, Motor City feel. It also suggests that Jack White is one of the few vocalists who could make a lyric like "Be like the squirrel" sound cool and even inspiring. Likewise, the showy "Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine" -- on which White resembles a garage rock snake-oil salesman -- is probably the only song featuring the word "acetaminophen" in its chorus. "It's True That We Love One Another," which features vocals from Holly Golightly as well as Meg White, continues the Stripes' tradition of closing their albums on a lighthearted note. Almost as much fun to analyze as it is to listen to, Elephant overflows with quality -- it's full of tight songwriting, sharp, witty lyrics, and judiciously used basses and tumbling keyboard melodies that enhance the band's powerful simplicity (and the excellent "The Air Near My Fingers" features all of these). Crucially, the White Stripes know the difference between fame and success; while they may not be entirely comfortable with their fame, they've succeeded at mixing blues, punk, and garage rock in an electrifying and unique way ever since they were strictly a Detroit phenomenon. On these terms, Elephant is a phenomenal success.

The four CDs in this Rhino Handmade set -- available only over the Internet unfortunately -- contains the complete concerts of Aretha Franklin and King Curtis' stand at the Fillmore West in March of 1971 (not February as identified on the original LPs). Franklin's performances at the Fillmore were her first, and producer Jerry Wexler came up with the idea of using studio players in lieu of her regular band. Franklin had worked with Curtis previously in the studio and the players he brought to the table included Cornell Dupree, drummer Bernard Purdie, Pancho Morales on congas, bassist Jerry Jemmont, and electric pianist Truman Thomas. In addition, the band enlisted Billy Preston to play organ and also enlisted the aid of the Memphis Horns. In other words, this was a group that could actually push the Queen of Soul out onto a ledge and was a match for her vocal power. The Mermphis Horns introduced the shows each night and then brought Curtis and his band out for an opening set. And from night one, as compiled and heard on his Live at Fillmore West album, these sets were smoking, in the pocket, and greasy, with highlights like "Whole Lotta Love," "Them Changes," "Whiter Shade of Pale," and a burning cover of "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)." When Franklin does walk onto the stage, she struts and goes into high gear with "Respect." Her performance on that opening night includes amazing renditions of "Spirit in the Dark" (with Ray Charles guesting), "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Love the One You're With" (also with Charles), and "Dr. Feelgood." The original album is augmented with tunes that didn't make the cut, including the oft-bootlegged "Call Me." In listening to these shows, what is striking is realizing that the majority of the Live at Fillmore West LP was taken from the last night of performances. The previous two evenings here then are startling in contrast, often in intensity and sometimes in sheer grit. The opening night's read of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is superior to either of the others, though sonically it's a bit thinner. Another gem is the version of Bobby Bland's "Share Your Love With Me." That was left off the original album. In all there are 42 unreleased performances! In addition to wonderful between-song banter and inside jokes, the true flow of the shows, the enthusiasm of the audiences, and raw, in-your-face performances put this set in a league of its own. There are also a few decent photographs and an authoritative yet friendly liner essay by British critic David Nathan. This is a limited edition and most likely won't be on the Rhino Handmade shelves long. Aural history can be dry at times and of interest to those who have a penchant for such things. Aretha Franklin and King Curtis' Don't Fight the Feeling is as saucy as it gets.

This installment in Decca Records archival Scene-related CDs explores the sizable contributions of the fairer sex to pop music during the 1960s. While these ladies may have made a significant impact in their native U.K., the vast majority remained virtual unknowns on other shores. The Girls' Scene (2000) contains over two-dozen cuts, representing some of the best female vocal groups of the era. Much like their Stateside colleagues, songs were often derived from veteran contemporary composers. This collection offers up distinguished reworkings from performers whose names might not be instantly recognizable, although the melodies should be. The Motown-sound is represented by "Two Lovers" from Louise Cordet, as well as Beryl Marsden's spot-on reading of "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Thru' His Eyes." The Brill Building pop scene spawned the Gerry Goffin/Carole King compositions "The Boy From Chelsea" -- sung here by Truly Smith -- an inspired take of "Hey Boy" by Barry St. John, and along with Phil Spector, Marianne Faithfull's "Is This What I Get For Loving You?" Faithfull is one of the more prominent figures to have emerged from Andrew Loog Oldham's notable stable of talent. In many ways, Oldham was the English equivalent to Spector, as both were multi-talented moguls who were best known for their work behind the scenes with others. From his coterie are Adrienne Poster and Vashti -- each respectively cover Keith Richard and Mick Jagger tunes "Shang a Doo Lang" and "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind." Lorraine Child goes even closer to the source on the Oldham-penned "You." Olivia Newton-John is certainly a name that stands out, as does her unmistakable Aussie warble on the otherwise hard-hitting attack of Jackie DeShannon's "Till You Say You'll Be Mine." Parties interested in Girls' Scene should also note the other entries in this series, including the Rock 'N' Roll Scene (1999), Blues Scene (1999), Freakbeat Scene (1999), Psychedelic Scene (1998), and two volumes from the wonderful world of the Mod Scene (1998).

Joe Tex had been releasing records for almost a decade before he had his first hit in 1965. This 25-track compilation doesn't come close to including all of them, but it does a good job in assembling the most important of those, concentrating solely on discs he made for the Dial label, almost all of the songs having been cut in 1961-1964 prior to his chart breakthrough. At this point, Tex -- as was the case in the pre-fame recordings of numerous '60s soul stars -- was still searching for a style to some degree, and by and large the cuts aren't as earthy as the ones he'd lay down later in the decade. There are even songs with strong debts to early-'60s dance-novelty tunes ("The Peck"); arrangements similar to those heard in early-'60s 45s by poppy early soul singers like Marv Johnson and Dee Clark; and hints of Clyde McPhatter, Sam Cooke, and doo wop. Yet at the same time, there are also strong pleading ballads much closer to the Southern soul style with which he became identified, all of them written by Tex himself, the slightly James Brown-ish "Blood's Thicker Than Water" being a particular highlight in that regard. Because this isn't Tex at his peak or his most characteristic, you wouldn't recommend this as the first or second anthology to acquire. But if you do like Tex at his '60s peak, it's suggested listening, both because it illustrates his roots and because it's enjoyable on its own merits. Also on the CD are a few tracks that fall outside the disc's principal aim of anthologizing 1961-1964 Dial singles, but are worthy additions that are hard to find on compact disc, including the 1967 holiday-themed 45 "I'll Make Every Day Christmas (For My Woman)" and its flip, "Don't Give Up"; the 1965 B-side "Build Your Love on a Solid Foundation"; and two cuts from a 1965 LP, "Tell Me Right Now" and the Sam Cooke-styled "There Is a Girl."

The U.K.'s premier outpost for punky pop and poppy punk, Damaged Goods released their first label sampler CD in 1998. It's the Cheap Damaged Goods is a 30-track history of the label's effort to bring the world some of the rawest, hookiest garage-inspired music around. The lineup includes some big names like Holly Golightly, whose "Virtually Happy" is taken from her first solo album and starts the disc off with a sultry bang; Thee Headcoats, who are the label's centerpiece group and contribute one of their most scathing tracks, "(We Hate the Fuckin') NME"; the Manic Street Preachers, whose early single "New Art Riot" is included; the always charming Helen Love; the Television Personalities; and the re-formed Revillos. Some of the lesser known bands provide the highlights of the disc: the Budget Girls' silly "Tickle Bee," Lovesick's melancholy punk-pop anthem "Sunflower," Dutronc's pounding cover of Jacques Dutronc's classic "Et Moi, Et Moi, Et Moi," Cukooland's C-86-styled girl-group pastiche "Endless Song," Bristols' supergroovy garage swinger "Questions I Can't Answer," and the unfortunately named the Adventures of Parsley's wonderful "On the Move." The disc presents a highly entertaining picture of a label who always knew exactly what they were on about, a label that released some of the best indie rock on the planet. The proof is in the pudding and the pudding tastes damn good.

So many changes have taken place since the release of the Pipettes' previous album that sorting it out is just too much of a pain. All you really need to know is that members of the group have come and gone and their sound has changed from girl group imitators to disco-pop acolytes. The constant behind the group, songwriter and ringleader Monster Bobby, is still there, still calling the shots on Earth vs. the Pipettes. His decision to leave the girl group sound behind was actually a wise one. Despite the tunes often being quite good, there was something off about the presentation. They seemed trapped between wanting to emulate the sound exactly and trying to add something more modern to the mix, which left them in limbo. The new approach is more blatantly pop and newfangled.

Mavis Staples may not have a voice with the kind of range and pure power of an Aretha Franklin, but she understands the ins and outs of phrasing and nuance, and brings an inimitable, gritty passion to everything she sings, even into her seventies. She’s also not afraid to walk right down the middle of the road between secular and sacred, fully aware that both the blues and gospel are really talking about the same thing -- the need to get to a better place. She performs this delicate synthesis well on You Are Not Alone, an album that finds her teamed with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, whose production on this project is surprisingly sympathetic to Staples' strengths, and more importantly, doesn’t make her sound like an adjunct participant in a Wilco album. No, this is Mavis' show, and she grabs ahold of well-chosen covers like Randy Newman's “Losing You,” Allen Toussaint's “Last Train,” Reverend Gary Davis' “I Belong to the Band,” and John Fogerty's “Wrote a Song for Everyone” with conviction, wringing every bit of wisdom, anger, compassion, and joy out of them, while bringing a fresh perspective to traditional gospel pieces like “In Christ There Is No East or West,” “Creep Along Moses,” and “Wonderful Savior,” reminding that redemption is pretty hard work even in the best of times. She tackles a couple of Pops Staples pieces here, too, “Don’t Knock” and “Downward Road,” making this whole set a well-rounded portrait of Mavis Staples as she stands then, now, and tomorrow. Tweedy wrote several songs for the project, but only one, the title track “You Are Not Alone,” appears here, and he wisely resisted any urge to overdo his sonic stamp on the album. Most tracks feature sturdy, simple, and subdued backing that allows Staples' voice to carry the show, highlighted by reverbed guitar reminiscent of Pops Staples' trademark sound, although only enough to suggest it -- nothing here gets in the way of Mavis' voice. You Are Not Alone is a solid outing that somehow amazingly manages to be both secular and sacred at once, and there is a stripped-down timelessness to it. It’s gospel. It’s blues. It’s about love and redemption, and how each needs the other.

The Best of Divine is a 14-track collection of the campy singer/actor's disco singles, containing such songs as "Shoot Your Shot," "Jungle Jezebel," "Love Reaction," "T-Shirts and Tight Blue Jeans," "Kick Your Butt," "Alphabet Rap," "You Think You're a Man," and "I'm So Beautiful." Divine is not a particularly gifted singer, and these songs are so arch and campy that only listeners with a taste for extreme kitsch will want to explore this. Those who do share that taste, however, might find the record enjoyable, at least in small doses.

Maki Nomiya & Fernanda Takai - Maki-Takai No Jetlag [2010]

Nomiya Maki (ex-Pizzicato Five) unites with Brazilian singer Fernanda Takai (Pato Fu) for a mini-album containing songs selected by the two. Included are a new original song by Maki called "Nagoya" with Japanese lyrics, P5's "A Message Song", Ishida Ayumi's "hitori ni shite ne", Pato Fu's "Saudade", and a live version of bossa nova "O Barquinho" also sung in Japanese.
Although the two have performed shows together in both Brazil and Japan, here the music was recorded in Brazil while Maki recorded her vocals in Japan, and the whole mixed together. The whole is produced by John Ulhoa, Pato Fu's guitarist and husband of Fernanda.

On August 31, 1970, Leonard Cohen was scheduled to play the third Isle of Wight Festival. The conditions were not optimal. While 100,00 tickets or so had been sold, there were nearly 600,000 in attendance. Fans overran the island to see and hear the Who, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, and many others over five days. Given the gatecrashers, things got ugly and violent. Some acts were booed from the stage while others were pelted with projectiles; fires were set -- even the stage got torched during Hendrix's performance. Murray Lerner, the award-winning documentary filmmaker who had been commissioned to capture it all, packed up his gear. Thank goodness he stayed.
Leonard Cohen, was 35, had two albums under his belt with a third on the way. He was scheduled to play after Hendrix, right in the middle of the chaos. Organizers tried to find a replacement piano for the one that had been burned -- he was asleep in his trailer when he was awakened at 1 a.m. An unkempt Cohen took the stage without hesitation at 2 a.m in a safari jacket and jeans over his pajamas, along with the Army -- producer Bob Johnson on organ, piano, and guitar; Elkin "Bubba" Fowler on bass and banjo; fiddler Charlie Daniels; guitarist Ron Cornelius; and vocalists Corlynn Hanney, Susan Mussmano, and Donna Washburn. Cohen opened with a story about a man at a circus asking people to light a match so they could see one another; he requested that from the rowdy crowd. Some granted it early, many more later. Lerner instinctually reset a camera just before his performance and got most of Cohen's show, the vibe of which transformed the festival's last day.
It's all here on CD and DVD from Legacy. Cohen played songs from his first two albums, debuted a few -- including "Suzanne," from the forthcoming Songs of Love and Hate -- recited poems, and told stories. He offered personal confessions about being in a cheap hotel, trying to pick up a blonde woman in a Nazi poster while coming down from a speed run; he talked of friends who committed suicide because they had no one to talk to; and shared effortlessly, politely, and honestly without artifice or "showmanship." In other words, the qualities he has become known for throughout his career.
The CD captures the entire performance in nearly pristine sound. The hits (of the time) are here, the banter is here, and the entire performance by the band is so special it will leave the listener utterly satisfied. Whether it's "So Long Marianne," the poem "They Locked Up a Man," the stellar reading of "The Partisan," or the chilling version of "Famous Blue Raincoat," this is top-notch Cohen. The DVD is imperfect, but that's alright; it is still essential viewing artistically and historically. What Lerner captures is utterly magical, and not to be missed. His sense of timing is impeccable, his taste unassailable. Since he hastily reset his gear, there is one camera instead of three, but it hardly matters. He captures the essence of what happened, he understood instinctually what was going on on-stage and with the crowd, and he portrays that throughout the gig. The concert is interspersed with brief interviews with eyewitnesses Judy Collins and Joan Baez; but their input is unnecessary and self-serving. Kris Kristofferson's first person commentary, however, is wonderful, because it is journalistic and simple, without nostalgic interpretation. Cohen is not present as a commentator, which is unfortunate, but this is only a small complaint, really. This is one CD/DVD package that is so complementary, its pieces are inseparable.

Isobel Campbell - Milk White Sheets [2006]

Before she recorded Ballad of the Broken Seas with Mark Lanegan, Isobel Campbell recorded the breathtakingly beautiful Milk White Sheets. Instead of the showy country balladry she and Lanegan laid down, here Campbell delves deep into the sounds of 1960s British folk. In the liner notes she comes right out and says that Milk White Sheets was inspired by the music of female folk giants Shirley Collins, Jean Ritchie, and Anne Briggs. It's no stretch to say that Campbell has created an album that stands shoulder to shoulder with anything her idols released. Everything about Milk White Sheets is enchanting and lovely. The arrangements are intimate and small; mainly built around acoustic guitars and Campbell's voice but made lively with the addition of cellos, glockenspiel, percussion, and on the instrumental "James," string arrangements that call to mind Robert Kirby's wonderful work with Nick Drake. The songs Campbell picks to cover are always interesting choices, and her own compositions are sublime. As an indication of just how authentic her songs sound, it's difficult to tell the songs she composed from the traditional folk songs like "Reynardine" and "Loving Hannah" that she covers. Best of all is Campbell's voice. While she's a fine pop singer and a lovely country crooner, her tender and seductive vocals are a revelation. Whether breathily cooing through the sweet "Cachel Wood" or yipping through "Yearning," she has never sounded this good before. It truly sounds like she was born to sing this autumnal and very British kind of folk. Hopefully her fans will stick with her on this fascinating detour, and hopefully she herself will keep releasing records this intimate, beautiful, and melancholy.

A Girl Called Dusty was the debut album of British singer Dusty Springfield. It was released in the UK on Philips Records in 1964.
In 1997, two years before Springfield's death, a digitally remastered and expanded edition was issued by Mercury Records/Universal Music, then including eight bonus tracks as well as a few alternate mixes. Due to the fact that some of the original multi-track master tapes no longer were to be found in the Philips Records archives, some tracks on the 1997 version are in mono or in some cases re-created stereo mixes using alternate vocal takes. The current CD version of A Girl Called Dusty, which still remains in print, is consequently radically different from the original album, as produced by Johnny Franz and Springfield herself. The album appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

In 1990, after almost a decade's absence from the new-release lists and an even longer time away from the charts, Dusty Springfield re-emerged with Reputation. A partial collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys, it proved to be her most satisfying record in 15 years and sold better than anything that she'd released since the '60s. The late-'80s synth pop sound melded perfectly with Springfield's still very expressive, powerful, and soulful singing — Dan Hartman handled the producing chores on four of the cuts, Andy Richards on one, and the album has a unified sound, at once airy and dense, soaring and deep. The best cuts, however, are the five produced (and, in all but one case, written) by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys. Much as Robert Fripp may have been put on this earth first and foremost to produce the Roches, Tennant and Lowe's collaborations with Springfield are as satisfying and unified and whole as she ever achieved working with Jerry Wexler, Thom Bell, and Roland Chambers 20 years earlier. She seems to reach that much higher and also that much deeper inside of herself on "In Private" and "Daydreaming" to much subtler effect; those cuts are very much of a piece with her best work on the Dusty in Memphis, A Brand New Me, and Cameo albums, just later links in the same chain, and their effect is to leave the listener breathless and delighted with their sheer beauty as recordings, as well with as her performance.

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ballad Of The Broken Seas

It's tempting to say something facile like "beauty meets the beast" in writing about this collaboration between former Belle & Sebastian member Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, best known for his work with Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age. After all, Campbell's voice is all sweet angelic whisper while Lanegan's whisky-and-nicotine rasp sounds like the product of ten thousand nights in a barroom, but somehow these sweet and sour elements come together with striking and impressive results on Ballad of the Broken Seas. It helps that musically these two are not far away from the same page; the ghostly blues-based structures of Lanegan's Whiskey for the Holy Ghost and The Winding Sheet may be starker than Campbell's stuff with Belle & Sebastian or her solo set Amorino, but they both appear to revel in the sort of glorious sadness that draws beauty from melancholy, and they find a dark and lovely common ground on this set of songs. Campbell produced the album and wrote the bulk of the material (though Lanegan wrote one song, the moody and satisfying "Revolver"), and while it's no great surprise that she comes up with superb material for herself, she also knows what to make of Lanegan's expressive rasp ("The Circus Is Leaving Town" is as good a performance as he's ever recorded), and their numbers together (especially "The False Husband" and the cover of Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man") recall what one hoped Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue's duets on Murder Ballads would sound like. Ballad of the Broken Seas is a superbly crafted bit of late-night introspection that brings out the best in both Lanegan and Campbell and adds new and unexpected facets to their impressive repertoires.

Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan seemed like an unlikely musical couple when they first began collaborating in 2006 -- she of the breathy whisper, he of the deep, bluesy rasp. But their intriguing blend of bitter and sweet has turned into viable ongoing partnership, and on their third album together, Hawk, Campbell and Lanegan continue to merge their distinct but complimentary styles while adding a few new edges to their approach. While Lanegan didn't write any material for this album, someone got the fine idea of persuading him to dip into the Townes Van Zandt songbook, and his voice was tailor made for the grim undercurrents of "Snake Song," while on "No Place To Fall" he inches into a higher register than gives his voice a welcome vulnerability which perfectly suits Van Zandt's weary romanticism. "Come Undone," meanwhile, plays out over a taut R&B-flavored backing track with strings and a relentless single-note piano mirroring the tension of the lyrics, while "You Won't Let Me Down Again" winds out its dark, atmospheric melody with a dose of slashing guitar courtesy of James Iha. "Get Behind Me" is a rollicking dose of honky tonk fire, and "Lately" closes out the set with some passionate country gospel pleading. But the biggest surprise is the title track, a righteous blast of sax-driven blues that stomps and swaggers to hard that there's no room for vocals, and if it seems like an odd choice for an album from a pair of singers, it's wild and tough enough that no one is likely to mind. Much of the rest of the album follows the template of Campbell and Lanegan's first two albums, but if it's heavy on echoing atmospherics and open spaces, there's no arguing that Campbell (as producer and primary songwriter) knows how to make this stuff work, and her duets with Lanegan sound only more confident and intuitive with time. Ballad of the Broken Seas was a surprise because two seemingly mismatched artists proved to be a splendid collaboration; four years later, Hawk isn't as startling, but it's encouraging to know that the magic between Campbell and Lanegan not only hasn't worn off, it's manifesting itself in new and compelling ways.

Recorded while still a member of Thee Headcoatees (she would leave the following year), Holly Golightly's sixth solo release is another winner from start to finish. If the production is a little rougher and more garagey than on subsequent efforts, her earthy charm, sardonic -- sometimes feisty -- attitude, and sure way with a catchy chorus are in full effect. As usual, there's a cool cover -- in this case a languid, reverb-drenched duet with Billy Childish on Ike Turner's "Your Love Is Mine" -- and a couple of angry numbers, "Come the Day" and opening track "I Can't Be Trusted" ("Why won't you see/I can't give you anything/But misery"). More unusually, Serial Girlfriend features an instrumental track, the rollicking "Grandstand," which allows Golightly to showcase her underrated prowess on the electric guitar, and the final track, "Now," comes close to a cappella in dropping (or at least minimizing) guitar, bass, and drums in favor of piano, chimes, and Golightly's distinctive voice. For anyone who's ever wondered what the early Beatles or Rolling Stones might have sounded like with a female front person, Serial Girlfriend -- in which drummer Bruce Brand channels Charlie Watts (circa "Get off of My Cloud") for "Down Down Down" -- is the highly enjoyable answer.

It's hard to imagine how God couldn't possibly dig Holly Golightly's sixth groovy full-length, but to each his own (then again, Blind Willie McTell's "God Don't Like It" actually refers to moonshine). The former Headcoatee and band are in fine fettle on these 12 tracks of twangy British Invasion pop with an R&B twist. Things get off to an auspicious start with rollicking, reverb-drenched original, "I Hear You," and come to a honey of a conclusion with one of those surprising covers that have become Golightly's stock in trade -- in this case, a virtually unrecognizable surf guitar version of Bill Withers' "Use Me." She also gives "Pretty Good Love" (aka, "That's a Pretty Good Love," a song mostly closely associated with blues belter Big Maybelle) a slow, seductive "Fever"-like spin, but wrote the rest of the material herself, with the exception of Dan Melchior's "Can't Stand to See Your Face" (and duets with him on the harmonica-driven "Feel Something").

Three days after the death of legendary musician and producer Jim Dickinson, his son, Luther Dickinson, gathered friends at the family Zebra Ranch studio in Independence, MS, and recorded Onward and Upward, an album of gospel songs, hymns, and blues spirituals, tracking directly to half-inch tape with no overdubs or embellishments, and the result was a no-frills and intimate testament of grief and renewal. Luther, long a member of the North Mississippi Allstars and also currently a member of the Black Crowes, dubbed the ad hoc group the Sons of Mudboy, a reference to his father's influential band Mudboy and the Neutrons. On hand were two original members of the Neutrons, Sid Selvidge (guitar, vocals) and Jimmy Crosthwait (washboard, vocals), along with Jimbo Mathus (guitar, mandolin, banjo, vocals), Steve Selvidge (guitar, Dobro, vocals), Paul Taylor (washtub bass), and vocalist Shannon McNally. The album itself is essentially a musical wake, a way to both honor and say goodbye to Jim Dickinson in the one way he would most certainly want, and it is full of muted gems like the gently sad opener, "Let It Roll" (which Luther wrote that day), a haunting version of "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning," and "Back Back Train," among others. Onward and Upward emerges as a moving tribute, an emotional goodbye, and an honest, loving photograph of a moment in time, a moment when music reaches past entertainment to become the very heart of the matter.

Although Curtis Mayfield's album sales had decreased significantly by the late '70s, the smooth Chicago soul veteran remained a popular live attraction well into the '80s. Audiences still longed to hear gems from both his years with the influential Impressions and his early solo hits, and he gives them exactly what they want on this album (released as both a single CD and a two-CD set). Mayfield reminds us just how great the Impressions were on heartfelt versions of such '60s classics as "Gypsy Woman" (which greatly influenced the Isley Brothers), "It's Alright" and the inspirational "People Get Ready," and is equally captivating on incisive, early-'70s sociopolitical hits like "Pusherman," "Freddie's Dead," and "If There's a Hell Below." Live in Europe's main flaw isn't Mayfield's performances, but a band that, although decent, just doesn't go that extra mile or do this superb material justice. Horns, a main ingredient of many of his hits, are sorely missed -- especially on "Move on Up" -- and Buzz Amato's keyboards simply can't take their place.

Kurt Cobain made plenty of mistakes in his life, but loving the Vaselines was not among them. Nirvana covered three of their songs, and as Kurt might tell you if he were alive today, from 1986 to 1989 the Vaselines were the best pop band around. Sub Pop was smart enough to cash in on the Nirvana connection, and in 1992 released the career retrospective The Way of the Vaselines: A Complete History. From the stomping, singalong opener "Son of a Gun" to the distorted and nasty "Let's Get Ugly" 17 tracks later, this collection was the Holy Grail of indie pop. In 2009, hot off of Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee's reunion (and appearance at Sub Pop's 20th anniversary bash), the label remastered the studio recordings, added a second disc of demos and live performances, and retitled the whole thing Enter the Vaselines.
The Vaselines' music is unfailingly amateurish, almost completely silly, occasionally quite perverted, and always about sex. It has the simplicity and ear-grabbing melodies of the best bubblegum, the loud and semi-competent guitars of punk, and some of the attitude and lo-fi sound of their noise rock contemporaries like the Jesus and Mary Chain. They also had a charmingly unschooled vocal approach (Kelly sounding cool and tough, McKee sweet as pie) with a fleeting acquaintance to pitch but tons of humor, attitude, and style. Throw in a bunch of religion and add brilliantly simple choruses that will have you singing along the first time you hear the songs (as well as the thousandth), and you've got genius. This brilliance shines brightest on the band's first two EPs, which were recorded by Stephen Pastel and contain the songs the group was best known for, like "Molly's Lips," "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam," and "Son of a Gun." The full-length album Dum-Dum, recorded without Pastel's guidance and with a bulked-up, rockier sound, is still quite amazing and features some timelessly cool songs like "Sex Sux (Amen)," which includes the immortal line "Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost/I'm the Sacred Host with the most," the rip-roaring "Monsterpussy," and the hilarious "The Day I Was a Horse." Taken together, the band's official output is brainy, funny, sexy, catchy pop music at its best.
So if the first disc of Enter the Vaselines is absolutely essential, the bonus disc is for fanatics only. The demos for "Son of a Gun" and unrecorded songs "Rosary Job" and "Red Poppy" are interesting from a historical perspective but not very listenable, as the duo hadn't really put its sound together yet. The live set from December of 1986 (three months before the first EP was recorded) is a sloppy, stiff performance with Kelly and McKee backed by a drum machine and fighting to be heard above the din of the unimpressed crowd. Much better is the live set from 1988 with a full band playing songs from the EPs and Dum-Dum (and a cover of Gary Glitter's "I Didn't Know I Loved You ['Til I Saw You Rock 'n' Roll]") in front of a semi-enthusiastic crowd. They still sound raw and amateurish but also like they are having much more fun. Kelly, McKee, and Pastel also seem to have had fun when they sat down for the chat about the history of the band that is a part of the set's beautiful packaging. Credit Sub Pop for putting tons of effort into the release of Enter the Vaselines and treating the band and the music with the respect they deserve. For a short period of time, there was nothing like them on Earth.

The 25 tracks compiled on this single-disc compilation have been issued under a plethora of titles since the '80s -- most notably in the digital domain as Raunchy Rock & Roll (1995). Many of these dirty ditties have become legendary in frat houses and barrooms across the world, despite their initial obscurity due to excruciatingly poor under-the-counter circulation. A more sociological vantage point reveals a broad scope of musical styles, ranging from doo wop ("Don't Fuck Around With Love") to redneck country & western twang ("Pussy Cat Song"). However, there are a few pop music genres that seem to artistically lend themselves to the unadulterated and overtly sexual intonations -- some intentional, others quite serendipitous. Among the most authentic are the '50s rhythm & blues and doo wop styles which inform tracks such as "Derby Town" and "The Rotten Cock Suckers Ball" -- both of which became infamous platters for the Clovers. The latter title was revived by Frank Zappa as "Cock-Suckers' Ball" and issued on his live Does Humor Belong in Music? multimedia project from the mid-'80s. Likewise, there are '50s sock-hop ballads such as "It's So Hard to Say I Love You" and "Sit on My Face," and even rockabilly ("Yo Yo"). There are also garage rockers ("Baby, Let Me Bang Your Box") and a funky (literally!), randy reggae reading of Rare Earth's hit "Get Ready," which is subtitled "French Style." More modern rock & roll contributions include "Fuck Off" by, appropriately enough, the Dildos, as well as David Trout's double-entendre-laden "Fast Food Song." Other notable inclusions are Screamin' Jay Hawkins' R&B hoodoo "Bite It" and "Constipation Blues," as well as the incendiary coupling of Jackie Wilson and LaVern Baker on a wild take of "Think Twice," which was decidedly toned down for the legit 45 rpm (b/w "Please Don't Hurt Me") for Brunswick in 1965. Also in the mix are a few sides -- such as "Did He Eat Your Titty" and "Stickball" -- that defy category. For Adults Only is a refreshingly self-indulgent artifact that reflects the decidedly more carnal and base aspects of popular music. Potential enthusiasts should be aware of the sound quality, which vacillates from track to track. While not unlistenable, there is copious surface noise to deal with on a majority of the recordings.

This Penthouse-era EP is comprised of one track from that album, "Chinatown," two markedly different recordings of Serge Gainsbourg's classic "Bonnie & Clyde," and a faithful cover of Talking Heads' "Thank You for Sending Me an Angel." While the "Clyde Barrow Version" of "Bonnie & Clyde" was included as a hidden track on the Penthouse LP, the "Bonnie Parker Version" of the song is exclusive to this EP. Much slower and deliberate than the straightforward "Barrow" recording, the "Parker" version is much more effective, allowing the duet between Dean Wareham and Stereolab's Laetitia Sadier room to breathe aside the lovely cello accompaniment without sounding forced. Although, just the chance to hear Wareham deliver his deadpan in French is worth the price of admission.

Keb Darge is a Scottish DJ; Paul Weller is a British rock star. Both have a refined taste for Northern soul and other areas of R&B, something that’s keenly on display on their 2010 compilation Lost & Found: Real R 'n' B & Soul. Divided neatly between Darge’s and Weller’s picks, with the former responsible for the first half and the latter the second, Lost & Found sounds like the work of one compiler, one with a fondness for jump blues that complements the cool, uptown groove on display on the rest of the record. Scanning the track listing, it would seem that Big T. Tyler and Daddy Cleanhead wouldn’t quite mesh with the ‘60s soul that comprises the bulk of the record, but Lost & Found is sequenced with the seamless grace of a great DJ, so this flows like a great party while kicking up a lot of little-known classics from both the less well-known (Emmitt Long, Elsie Wheat, the Creations) and the justly celebrated (Tammi Terrell, Bobby Blue Bland, Major Lance).

The five new tracks on the EP were recorded during the same sessions in Glasgow and the Catskills that went on to yield 'Sunday at Devil Dirt' The songs on the EP are ones Isobel felt worked best as a separate piece of work, and the discerning listener may observe a different flavour to much of the album, though as ever Campbell and Lanegan compliment each other beautifully. Highlights include the beautiful 'Asleep on a Sixpence' and 'Rambling Rose, Clinging Vine' which already sound like instant standards.

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Ramblin' Man [2005] EP

The pairing of sweet Isobel Campbell and sour Mark Lanegan looks weird on paper, but it actually works fairly well on this short EP. Campbell handles the production and music, she and Lanegan both contribute vocals, and their deceptively ramshackle cover of Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man" that gives the record its title lopes along woozily, Lanegan's loose-as-a-goose vocals a real treat. "(Do You Wanna) Come Walk with Me?" is the highlight, being a sweet and tender acoustic folk song featuring lovely harmony vocals from the pair. The other two songs are slight on one hand (Lanegan's "Revolver, Pt. 2") and string-filled and dramatic on the other ("St. James Infirmary"), and neither features Lanegan's vocals. The whole affair is lovely and dreamy and too darn short. Fans of both artists should grab it up, although they might be left feeling vaguely unsatisfied.

Given that Leonard Cohen's recent international concert tour was prompted by the fact his former manager purportedly made off with his life's savings, only a curmudgeon would blame the man for trying to make the enterprise as profitable as possible. Roughly 14 months after releasing Live in London, which preserved Cohen's July 2008 performance at London's 02 arena, the venerable singer and songwriter is presenting to his fans Songs from the Road, featuring 12 tunes (on both CD and DVD) from his 2008 and 2009 concert dates. While Live in London captured the feel and flow of a single concert and featured most of Cohen's best-known songs, this set includes bits and pieces from 11 different shows, and while this album isn't exactly a collection of rarities, it does feature a number of lesser-known tunes (such as "Heart With No Companion" and "That Don't Make It Junk") and variant versions of some of the more famous numbers (Cohen juggles the order of the verses on "Suzanne" and adds a new verse to "Bird on a Wire"). While Live in London was a richly satisfying souvenir of Cohen's inspired comeback shows, Songs from the Road is less impressive in its more modest scale and less cohesive atmosphere. But the album still demonstrates that Cohen is a compelling and absorbing performer who brings his soul into every verse he sings, and his band is nothing less that superb; even when Dino Soldo's sax and Bob Metzger's guitar dip into jazz fusion sleepyland, they give Cohen just the musical support he needs, and the interplay between them and the vocalist is a marvel. Songs from the Road seems a bit pale compared to the excellence of Live in London, but both albums are enough to convince anyone that even at the age of 74, Leonard Cohen remains one of the most vital figures in contemporary music, and his gifts as a performer nearly match his abilities as a writer, no small accomplishment.

They weren't the most important folk-rock group of the mid-'60s; the Byrds and others produced more enduring music. Yet the Mamas & the Papas were undoubtedly the most commercially successful folk-rock group of their time, racking up an astonishing nine Top 30 hits in little more than a year and a half. This 43-song double CD is by far the most comprehensive document of their legacy. It draws most heavily from their two 1966 albums (nine songs originate from their debut album, If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears, alone), when John Phillips' songwriting talent had yet to exhaust itself. Beyond the hits, the material is variable. Quite a few album tracks -- especially "Got a Feelin'," "Straight Shooter," "Go Where You Wanna Go," "Once Was a Time I Thought," and their cover of Lennon/McCartney's "I Call Your Name" -- were strong enough to have been hits under their own steam. Their slowed-down, California-ized versions of rock oldies were more problematic. And there's no doubt that their later material is less spirited and memorable than their initial burst of glory. The set includes various late-'60s and '70s solo recordings by each of the group's members (including small hit singles by John Phillips and Cass Elliott). Perhaps the most intriguing rarities are from the members' pre-Mamas days. These include commercial folk by the Big Three (featuring Cass Elliott) and primitive pop-folk-rock by the Mugwumps (including Elliott, Denny Doherty, and future Lovin' Spoonful member Zal Yanovsky).

Irma Thomas - Wish Someone Would Care [1964]

It's because of powerful platters such as this that vocalist Irma Thomas would rightfully garner the crown as the undisputed Queen of New Orleans' thriving R&B scene. She established her reputation as a no-nonsense soul sister with the attitude-driven "You Can Have My Husband (But Don't Mess with My Man)," "A Good Man," and the regional hit "Look Up" prior to landing at the Crescent City powerhouse Minit Records. It was there she joined forces with the musical wunderkind Allen Toussaint who provided Thomas her next batch of notable sides, specifically "It's Raining" and "Ruler of My Heart" (aka "Pain in My Heart"). She was also among those to make the transition to the significantly larger Imperial Records after they purchased Minit in 1963. Wish Someone Would Care (1964) was the first of two long-players that Thomas released during her brief (1964 -- 1966) run on the Imperial roster. The album opens with the yearning torch balladry of the title track "Wish Someone Would Care" featuring Thomas supported by the inimitable H.B. Barnum, who tempers her remarkably versatile voice in the first of several sensitive arrangements. "I Need Your Love So Bad" is reflective of the guttural and bluesy style commonly associated with the likes of Otis Redding and James Brown. Here, Thomas definitely gives the boys a run for their money. The melody of "Without Love (There Is Nothing)" bears a striking resemblance to the "Tennessee Waltz" during the languid verses. The chorus, however, finds Thomas calling on her gospel roots to really "sell" the performance to great aplomb. Her update of Percy Mayfield's "Please Send Me Someone to Love" is a stone classic and easily takes on Odetta and Esther Phillips' respective versions with plenty of power to spare. "Time Is on My Side" -- initially relegated to a 45 rpm B-side -- found its way across the Atlantic ocean where it would take on a life of its own once the Rolling Stones covered it less than a year later. Similarly, Thomas' reading of the Jackie DeShannon co-penned "Break-A-Way" became a runaway smash throughout the bayou. And though it seemed to attract little attention elsewhere in the States, it has been remade to great effect by Tracey Ullman. Both the LP and single for Wish Someone Would Care crossed over onto the pop charts, simultaneously giving Thomas her only Top 40 single and Top 100 Album entry.

Although she will probably always be first remembered for her work as a member of the Mamas & the Papas, Cass Elliot had a surprisingly productive -- if abbreviated -- solo career after the group called it quits in 1968. She released five albums (and another in which she shared billing with Dave Mason) between 1968 and her death in 1974, and while it’s natural to wonder where this wonderful singer would have taken her talents had she lived longer, she left a larger recorded legacy than most people realize. This two-disc set (covering 1968 to 1971) includes material from her first two solo albums (plus related period songs like the single “Make Your Own Kind of Music”), leaving it as a nice summation of the first half of the post-Mamas & the Papas Cass Elliot story.

Alice Clark - Alice Clark (1972)

The self-titled 1972 disc from Alice Clark has more than stood the test of time, it is a sublime masterpiece of R&B/pop from the house of Bob Shad, the jazz producer who founded Mainstream Records, the original home for this superior project. Perhaps it isn't a coincidence that Clark's repertoire is exactly the kind of material Janis Joplin would pick up on in her days after Big Brother & the Holding Company, as this was also the first imprint that Joplin & the Holding Company recorded for professionally. Jimmy Webb's "I Keep It Hid" starts things off, one of the singles released from this original package and a nugget from another soul masterpiece, Supremes Arranged and Produced by Jimmy Webb, when Webb oversaw the post-Diana Ross girl group the same year as this release. A rendition of Fred Ebb and John Kander's tune, "Maybe This Time" from the motion picture Cabaret, is included along with three compositions from "Sunny" author Bobby Hebb. The collection of material from Webb, Ebb, and Hebb is actually genius A&R because all of it is a perfect fit. Northern soul fans and R&B critics are aware of this hidden treasure, but the buildup in this review of all the magnificent trappings shouldn't overshadow the fact that Alice Clark delivers the goods from start to finish. Some call it acid jazz, but truth be told, beyond the cult niches of space age bachelor pad and Northern soul -- the base that keeps obscure gems such as this bubbling on a variety of radar screens -- this is some of the best R&B you've probably never heard. The trifecta of Bobby Hebb songs include "Don't You Care" and "Hard, Hard Promises," two titles Hebb has yet to release on his own. The third is an up-tempo version of "The Charms of the Arms of Love" which concluded his 1970 album Love Games. Clark rips apart "It Takes Too Long to Learn to Live Alone" in wonderful fashion with tasteful guitar, chirping horns, and restrained vibraphone. Juanita Fleming's "Never Did I Stop Loving You" is just brilliant as the vocals take off into different dimensions inside and between the unique melody. The final track,"Hey Girl," is not the famous Carole King/Freddy Scott hit -- it's a true find originally covered by Donny Hathaway and written by Hathaway's percussion player, Earl DeRouen. Here Clark changes it to "Hey Boy" in a lively, jazz-heavy jaunt which concludes the Toshiba/EMI version of this dynamite set of recordings that should have made Alice Clark a superstar.

Issued on CD as part of Universal France's Essentials of Cinema series, Serge Gainsbourg's soundtracks to Michel Colombier's 1968 Ce Sacre Grand-Pere, and Pierre Koralnik's scandalous Cannabis, are among the most startling pieces of music in his oeuvre. Cannabis was based around a tawdry thriller and was set by Pierre Koralnik in the free, lone-generation of the late 1960s, and starred none other than Gainsbourg and wife Jane Birkin. The film, a kind of revenge tale featured lots of gratuitous (real) sex and was a commercial flop. But its score is one of the most sophisticated pieces of music Gainsbourg ever conceived. The score is a wondrously baroque and anthemic rock score with elements of Middle Eastern folk songs, and a pop cabaret joviality (courtesy of Jean-Claude Vannier's loopy song "I Want To Be Crazy," sung by Birkin with a drugged-out string section). It was orchestrated for a complete army of electric guitars, harpsichord, strings, and the loudest bassline ever threaded through a French movie. It's truly amazing. The score the to the Colombier film is tacked on as bonus material, and is far more traditional, but has enough pop-rock charm and nutty electric guitar and Hammond B3 play to make it a worthy add on to Cannabis. This is essential listening for any Gainsbourg or '60s soundtrack fan. In addition to the music are killer stills from Cannabis, and a brutally honest translated interview with Koralnik.

When the Love Generation (which, truthfully, did no better with that emotion than any other generation) got its first real glimpse of soul giant Otis Redding at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 backed by Booker T. & the MG's, a powerhouse band if there ever were one, they saw love with a capital L, because Redding sang love songs like the world was about to end, wringing the emotion out of them like a soulful, urgent hurricane. He was, simply put, an unstoppable force on-stage, taking all the energy of gospel and upping the ante until it seemed like the very sky itself was about to fly off into space from the very power of it. Redding was soul, and soul in every fiber of his being. The two sets included here, which predate the Monterey performance by a couple of months, were recorded in London (March 17) and Paris (March 21) on the Stax/Volt package tour of Europe in 1967, and they just might be even more astounding (particularly the Paris night) than the Monterey set. Working again with the MG's, with the horns of the Mar-Keys along for extra kick, Redding burns the house down in both of these sets, wringing every last bit of energy out of Sam Cooke's "Shake" until it seems the universe is about to come off its hinges, turning "Try a Little Tenderness" into a silken caress, making "I've Been Loving You Too Long" into an anthem for the hopeless arc of love, and taking "Day Tripper" to places the Beatles could only dream about, all with the MG's and the Mar-Keys churning behind him like a huge, funky turbine. This was Stax soul in all its ragged, vital glory. The original tapes of these sets (Atlantic issued an LP of the London show in 1967) have been reassembled and restored for this release, and the end result is a stunning reminder of what a giant Redding was. Release Date: Mar 1968Jackie DeShannon's Me About You album contains four originals, two co-written with producer Jack Nitzsche, and interpretations of material by such diverse songwriters as Holland-Dozier-Holland, Jimmy Webb, Carole Bayer Sager, Tim Hardin, two from the team of Gary Bonner and Alan Gordon, Van Dyke Parks, the Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian, and others. It's quite a crew, and the 13 songs make for a satisfying collection displaying both sides of DeShannon, the songwriter and the singer. As Harriet Schock was inspired by the film All About Eve for her American Romance album, DeShannon seems enamored of the 1961 Natalie Woods film which was Warren Beatty's debut. Her "Splendor in the Grass" should have been considered for the 1981 made-for-TV remake; it has a grand presentation, the originals holding up the serious side of the album. But for fans of her 1965 hit "What the World Needs Now Is Love," the songs that have that Top 40 flair are the Motown chestnut "I'll Turn to Stone" and an exquisite reading of John Sebastian's "Didn't Want to Have to Do It," which really should have made the songwriter proud. The tune would have been nice on New Arrangement, the singer's Columbia recording released in a time when adult contemporary ruled for Kenny Rogers, Olivia Newton-John, and, of course, Kim Carnes. Turtles/Helen Reddy/Earth, Wind & Fire producer Joseph Wissert must've brought the Alan Gordon/Gary Bonner material in, those two having written "Happy Together" along with other songs for Gary Lewis, Three Dog Night, and Lesley Gore. Their "I'm With You" is good sandwiched in between Jack and Jackie's (that is, Nitzsche and DeShannon, not to be confused with the president and the first lady) "I Keep Wanting You" and title track "Me About You." The originals have an edge over this particular Gary Bonner/Alan Gordon song, but what the album does display is a unique snapshot of a variety of 1960s songwriters, big production, and Jackie DeShannon's distinctive voice. Me About You comes in "...visual sound Stereo," whatever that was, and is a strong album for fans of the veteran performer Tim Hardin's "Baby Close Its Eyes," a lullaby that would have been perfect for Linda Ronstadt's 1996 collection (a duet with DeShannon would have been really nice). But the real gem here is "I'll Turn to Stone," which brings lightheartedness to an album that seems held back by serious tones, and the singer seems to be having the most fun when she's rocking out.

Release Date: Sep 26, 2000It takes a few spins to understand, and it is one of this prolific singer's many, many recordings, but when you spend some quality time with You Know Me, it starts unraveling its secrets in ways that only a truly great recording can. "Any Heart" is pure power, with the band weaving textures around Jackie DeShannon's distinctive vocal, the guitar relentless as it sustains the wall of sound. A true labor of love, few artists can produce a song this strong, and the fact that it follows three equally powerful compositions is evidence of the majesty that sweeps across all 14 tracks. "Steal the Thunder" opens the album with authority -- the resonating grandeur Eric Carmen's "Hungry Eyes" contained, with a better hook. DeShannon places everything in perfect order, the vocal gliding over a groove that is rock-solid. "Wing Ryder" changes the pace, and you get the idea that this major songwriter is building an album more complex than Carole King's Tapestry -- sheer art for art's sake. It ebbs and flows with an elegance younger musicians are too impetuous to seek out. The keyboards and guitars in "Wing Ryder" fuse styles that Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles were employing. And that's the secret here: DeShannon hasn't made another singer/songwriter album, she has shouldered a project akin to filming a major motion picture. "Somewhere in America" has a smart guitar riff and a wailing sax in the distance for one of the few ecology songs that isn't hampered by bulky words. "Song for Sandra Jeanne (Rites of Passage)" is for the singer's poet mom. It's just beautiful, the album changing moods like a photo album with pages turning before you on the silver screen. Each song is an episode, with the title track a defiant affirmation of someone who has been with listeners through the years, from "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" to "Bette Davis Eyes." While Lou Adler's sparse production on Tapestry allowed Carole King to bare her soul, DeShannon gives us a dense production, thick and rich, a wide range of sounds that could reinvent AAA radio if given the chance to be heard with the same presence as her best-known tunes. "Just How Right You Are" and "Red Montana Sky" are both driving and two of the more commercial tracks, with subtle hints of past work slipping into the lyrics. At close to 60 minutes, the 14 tracks are very much like a double LP. "There Goes the One" is a pensive recommitment, as graceful saxophone blends with the keyboards and the charming line, "I love the books that he reads." "Vanished in Time" is clear and measured, a youthful exuberance embracing the wisdom of years. This is a transformation for the veteran songwriter, and she seems to be driven more by her incredible instincts than by record company mandate. Where You're the Only Dancer, To Be Free, and earlier albums had an agenda most artists have to deal with, "Raze" is sound and performance, which shows real control. The drums drive the vocals and guitar backs DeShannon up with more dominance than maybe any album she's ever made. "Red Montana Sky" keeps surfacing as the tune that should be embraced by radio. "Here On" seems out of place, the reggae too dramatic a departure for all the elements that came before. It throws the listener for a loop and has a different character than all the other tracks on You Know Me, but that's either the luxury or the downside of artistic freedom, take your pick. Covering the Beach Boys' "Trader," however, is a perfect conclusion, and a perfect vehicle for Jackie DeShannon's timeless voice on an album that may take years before it is fully appreciated.

Release Date: Jan 1, 2004Recording Date: Apr 11, 1973-Sep 27, 1973The first of two albums on Atlantic records for the singer with an immaculate voice, Jackie was produced by Arif Mardin, Tom Dowd, and Jerry Wexler, one less producer than her What the World Needs Now Is Love album had helping craft the sounds. The festivities start off with John Prine's song "Paradise," a folksy title, not to be confused with the Perry Botkin, Jr./Harry Nilsson/Gil Garfield tune that Bette Midler and the Ronettes covered as the Jackie album tends to stay in an interesting space that could be described as "adult contemporary folk." "Vanilla 'Olay" moves brightly, a rare spirited pop vocal which is one of four compositions by the singer/songwriter here, two-thirds of the 12 selections coming from a dizzying array of songwriters. John Hurley and Ron Wilkins' "Heavy Burdens Me Down" is a beautiful gospel number, and the version of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" is one of the album's highlights. It certainly is interesting hearing someone with a traditional voice putting some polish on a Neil Young staple. This album is as smooth and dreamy as Dusty Springfield's Cameo, though the three producers don't let the singer break out of the controlled mood they've set. DeShannon's original "Laid Back Days" tries to escape those confines, and "Vanilla 'Olay" actually does, John Stewart's xylophone bringing the latter to another level. Steve Goodman's "Would You Like to Learn to Dance" has ace Bee Gees co-producer Albhy Galuten adding a distinguished harpsichord -- it really is special, and what the album cries out for is one of those extraordinary songs that the Bee Gees gave to so many artists, from Samantha Sang to Dionne Warwick and Rare Earth. Galuten could have made this very good album even better had he contributed his production skills. Cissy Houston adds some magic to the Donna Weiss/Mary Unobsky composition "I Won't Try to Put Chains on Your Soul," more gospel-pop which is another notable track here. Weiss would of course go on to co-write "Bette Davis Eyes" with DeShannon when the singer moved on to Columbia records for the adult contemporary album New Arrangement. Unlike the string of albums on Imperial where this extraordinary talent got to try new things and get into a groove, this '70s period has work spread across multiple labels, and as the music changed hands the sounds took bigger leaps than they might have had all this activity progressed under a single record company umbrella. Van Morrison's "I Wanna Roo You" works, as do the two Jackie DeShannon originals that conclude the album, "Peaceful in My Soul" and "Anna Karina." DeShannon plays acoustic guitar on "Anna Karina," "Laid Back Days," "Vanilla 'Olay," and "I Wanna Roo You," adding her personality to the musical mix. Jackie is an interesting and worthwhile collection of 12 songs falling stylistically somewhere between her albums What the World Needs Now Is Love from the '60s and You Know Me from the '90s. Her voice is in great shape, and the music is created with loving care, making for a satisfying chapter in the singer's impressive body of work. [Rhino Handmade's 2004 reissue included 12 bonus tracks.]

Jackie DeShannon's exquisite "What the World Needs Now Is Love" leads off this collection, and it's quickly followed by a cover of the Dusty Springfield hit "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," as well as a version of "It's All in the Game," making for a very recognizable three songs in a row on this 1968 release featuring as its title her 1965 Top Ten hit, originally on the This Is Jackie DeShannon album. What THIS is, is another stellar set of vocal performances with DeShannon being produced and arranged by a dazzling array of industry names. "So Long Johnny" is a pop tune by Burt Bacharach and Hal David which sounds so much like their Dionne Warwick work it is interesting to hear another great singer in that setting. "Windows and Doors" follows the same formula, while "Changing My Mind" could have been straight from the session that produced Petula Clark's "I Couldn't Live Without Your Love." Bacharach tracked the hit on his own, while Calvin Carter, who produced the For You album, collaborates with Bacharach and David on a number of songs here. Dick Glasser's production of "Little Yellow Roses" is the only one of the dozen songs with his participation; the country ballad is a real departure from the rest of the album, even with the arrangement by Jack Nitzsche. There are five arrangers in all, and an interesting cover concept. Jackie DeShannon appears on the front barefoot against a tree, holding a bouquet, while on the back cover she holds the bouquet with two boys, a Caucasian and an African American. It wasn't something you saw often in the '60s, and truly held with the sentiment of the title track. Tony Hatch's "Call Me" ends the album, and you knew from "Changin' My Mind" that those involved here were listening to Hatch's work, his influence among the many in the grooves of this fine recording. The interesting thing here is that Arthur Wright's sweeping arrangement sounds less like the work of Tony Hatch than Clydie King's ideas on the previously mentioned "Changin' My Mind." This version of "Call Me" fades too fast, and has that big band sound DeShannon employed on the For You album. "A Lifetime of Loneliness" recalls the sounds on popular Gene Pitney records, while Bob Crewe's "Everything Under the Sun" is a perfect Phil Spector-style pop ballad. What the World Needs Now Is Love offers many moods and sounds from the '60s through the voice of DeShannon. Not only is the title track one of her most recognizable hits, this album is a precious look at more of DeShannon's interpretation of other songwriters. Her only composition here is "Where Does the Sun Go?," while Bacharach and David get five of the seven titles. Their "Too Wait for Love" is more of the laid-back West Coast pop that they did so well and is a nice addition to the DeShannon catalog.

Swapping the polished pop approach of Jackie DeShannon's past hits for an appealingly rough-edged country-soul sensibility, the record celebrates a place and time that transcended the physical world to signify a virtual Garden of Eden for the flower-power generation. Featuring extensive contributions from pianist Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack and guitarist Russ Titleman, Laurel Canyon boasts a swampy, lived-in charm that perfectly complements DeShannon's sexily gritty vocals. Sheet Music finds Nancy Sinatra giving luxurious, laid-back readings of a variety of romantic songs. She concentrates on '60s pop and pop/rock songs, from "Light My Fire" and "Something" to "Tired of Waiting for You" and "Shadow of Your Smile," throwing in some traditional pop tunes like "In the Wee Small Hours" along the way. Sinatra never had a terrific voice, but it was charming, and that was enough to sustain her through her '60s records. As she aged, it grew weaker, but on Sheet Music, she's carried by the lush arrangements, which draw attention away from her thinning voice. Though a little harder to find for North American and European consumers than Rhino's The Hit Years, this 26-track, single-disc Australian best-of has virtually everything from the Rhino compilation and then some. Besides all 18 songs from The Hit Years except "Tony Rome," this has eight additional tracks, making this the best-value Nancy Sinatra anthology. It should be noted that most of the additional nine tracks are not among Sinatra's very best efforts, several of them being country-flavored duets with producer Lee Hazlewood. Still, among those extras, the Sinatra-Hazlewood duets "Sundown, Sundown," "Paris Summer," and "Down from Dover" (the last of them a Dolly Parton cover) are good, and "Sand" -- the most notable omission from the Rhino set -- is one of the best and spookiest songs to feature both Sinatra and Hazlewood on vocals. Also among the extras is one of her better solo outings, "This Town." In fact, the only real disadvantage of this set is the absence of original release date and label information. Otherwise, it's a fine summary of the best work of a singer (and producer and songwriter) who put out some of the best pop-rock-country-folk kitsch of the 1960s, or of any other decade for that matter.

Even major Nancy fans may find their patience taxed by this album, on which she concentrates on non-rock popular standards by the likes of Irving Berlin, complete with weak vaudevillian MOR arrangements. Highlights are the Hazlewood-penned Top Ten hit "Sugar Town," and the two CD bonus tracks, taken from singles: "Somethin' Stupid" and the dramatic, almost menacing "Love Eyes."

Issued to coincide with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's historic exhibit of the same name, this two-CD set is a treasure-trove of hits, misses, rarities, and smoking grooves. Certainly Nash Vegas is the capital of country music, but in its day it also boasted a wealth of stomping rhythm and blues music that flourished in the city for the better part of three decades, until the bulldozers of "urban renewal" destroyed much of its cultural base and forced it from its terrain. With 35 tracks, plus a pair of bonus tracks that are commercials, this set is an affordable, indispensable introduction to a nearly forgotten part of American musical history. The labels represented here are a cross-section of the great regional independents that were so numerous n the '40s, '50s and '60s. Imprints such as Do-Ra-Mi, who recorded Audrey Bryant, Excello, Champion, Sun, Hickory, Bullet, Dial, A-Bet, Elf, and Sound Stage recorded both luminaries and nobodies. Here are early sides by Hank Crawford when he was in a jump band, the wild and wooly Esquerita, Joe Tex, Arthur Alexander, Roscoe Shelton, Joe Simon, Etta James, Johnny Adams, and Christine Kittrell. And there are cuts by cats like Johnny Jones, Nashville's premier blues guitar slinger, Audrey Bryant, the city's Sarah Vaughan, and others who scored big on Nashville radio and jukeboxes, such as Peggy Scott and Jo Jo Benson, Clifford Curry, and Robert Knight. While some of these names might not mean much to causal listeners of old rhythm and blues and soul, connoisseurs will be delighted to find these sides, many of them on CD for the first time. However, the appeal of this collection should not be limited to aficionados, as virtually every track is crackling with energy, verve, and raw immediate soul. Sound is better than decent, the selection is impeccable, and the track notes by Michael Gray are top-notch.

Eddie Hinton - Very Extremely Dangerous [LOSSLESS]

In his book Sweet Soul Music, Peter Guralnick described Eddie Hinton as "the last of the great white soul singers," and his debut album, 1978's Very Extremely Dangerous, sounds like a glorious throwback to the salad days of the Muscle Shoals, AL, R&B hit factory of the 1960s, where Wilson Pickett and Aretha Franklin cut some of their most memorable songs. Hinton had already earned an estimable reputation as a session guitarist by the time he finally got to step up to the mic as a solo artist, and Very Extremely Dangerous features him backed up by the always-expert Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and Hinton's strong and wiry guitar runs fit the group's emphatic support like a glove. (Hinton and his friends also knew how to bring a solid rock drive to these songs without losing their soulful groove in the process.) As a singer, Hinton was never afraid to step on the gas, and if his vocals are sometimes a bit over the top, they're also consumed with a raw and sweaty joy; like Wilson Pickett, Hinton is able to bring a surprising musicality to a shouting style that can express the pleasures of a hard-partying Saturday night ("Shout Bamalama") as well as the tender agony of love ("I Got the Feeling"). It was Eddie Hinton's poor fortune to cut a great blue-eyed soul album just as disco and funk had bumped deep soul off the charts, but Very Extremely Dangerous still stands as a fine example of latter-day soul at its most accomplished.

The Story of My LIfe stands out among latter-day Irma Thomas albums not only because she gives a consistently excellent performance, but because the record boasts three new songs from Dan Penn, who wrote some of the greatest soul songs of the '60s. While his new songs ("Hold Me While I Cry," "I Count the Teardrops," "I Won't Cry for You") aren't quite as strong as his best, they are nevertheless wonderful contemporary soul numbers, and they help make the record, the remainder of which is comprised of covers and slightly weaker new numbers, one of Thomas' best latter-day albums.
